Vince Gilligan Discloses He Has an Idea of How Pluribus Might Finish... Currently.
Vince Gilligan could not have predicted that Pluribus would turn into a breakout success. “God bless the fans,” he states. “I did not foresee the show being as passionately debated as it is, and it makes me overjoyed.”
Now that Season 1 of the popular program wrapping up—and the next chapter greenlit and underway—the writers' room reflected on the fan response and whether it will impact the storyline of Pluribus.
Regarding the Overwhelming Viewer Reception
One could easily to get distracted by the constant speculation and audience predictions regarding Pluribus. The creator is making a conscious effort to ignore the noise.
“The experience is akin to constantly eating hot fudge sundaes and being laughing uncontrollably,” he says. “It's the greatest thing, but I hear about it through word of mouth, and that's by design. I have never Googled myself, nor do I ever intend to. It's quite the opposite. It's a rabbit hole I know I would disappear down and then I'd be pooping in a five gallon bucket from Home Depot and I'd rarely emerge from my living room.”
Regardless of his concerted efforts, there’s no escaping the overwhelmingly positive response to the series. The only approach for the writers is to accept it graciously and try not to let it alter the course of the show.
“We don't try to tailor anything,” says co-executive producer Alison Tatlock. “The plot we develop is not impacted by online forums.”
“Better to keep our focus on the work,” he chimes in.
The Central Mystery: Has the showrunner Have a Plan for the Ending of Pluribus?
Considering the writers aren't taking cues by fan response, can we assume they already know how Pluribus will finally conclude? Essentially yes… in a way.
“We've developed some compelling concepts about where the show might end up,” Gilligan reveals. “yet we stand ready to throw out a decent plan for a superior concept. That philosophy has guided us in excellent shape on Better Call Saul and on Breaking Bad even before that. We scrap ideas when we find a more perfect path and I expect we'll continue doing that.”
Alternatively, if all else fails, Gordon Smith has a pretty funny idea to fall back on.
“My recurring proposal is that the entire story is inside a snow globe, and that we'll zoom out in the finale and we're in there,” Smith quips, “though the idea hasn't gained traction.”
Of course, why not reference the classics?
“I want Carol to wake up in bed with Bob Newhart there,” he jokes.
Pluribus is streaming now on the streaming service.
