The fast bowler Set to Play a Major Role in Iconic Rivalry

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed 309 Test scalps in 71 appearances with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief the selector has confirmed that pace spearhead Cummins will have a crucial role in the upcoming England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might be unavailable due to a stress fracture in his back that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no official announcement had been made regarding whether he would play, with the extended contest kicking off on 21 November in Perth.

He revealed that the captain is progressing and was "optimistic" about the likelihood of participating.

"We know that the window is narrowing and there are permutations involved, not just his injury, but other factors as well," he commented.

"We're encouraged. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a major part. With luck from the opening match. Should that not happen, then we'll pick it up."

Injury History

He was sidelined Australia's limited-overs series against New Zealand and India last month after medical tests showed a stress reaction in his back.

He has a history of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be proactive in his approach in his rehabilitation process to secure his spot for the Ashes.

He mentioned that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but conceded it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the initial match.

Alternative Arrangements

In case of absence, ex-skipper Smith will take over the captaincy.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their limited-overs matches against the Asian giants as a preventive step because of soreness in his side.

The selector characterized it as a "slight concern and mentioned that he's scheduled to appear in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to be ready to bowl."

"We put so much time has gone into creating the schedule for him to be available for the initial game as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the first two ODIs anyway. The way he swings the willow in shorter formats, even if it just sets him back for another day, we opted to take a cautious route."
