The star has handed over the full amount of his £25k Mercury Prize winnings to the trust for venues, which works to save the Britain's independent concert spaces.

The star was presented with the award on October 16 as his new release People Watching was named the best record of the previous year.

The musician has chosen to donate the funds to the Music Venues Trust, in appreciation of the essential function small stages had in his early career.

"As an artist wouldn't be doing my current career if it hadn't been for all the gigs I played around the North East, and elsewhere, when I was just getting going," stated Fender. "These locations are iconic, but they are in difficulty."

From early 2023 onward, over 150 of these venues have shut down – approximately one-sixth of the whole industry in the UK.

Over the past year, well-known musicians such as Pulp, Coldplay, Katy Perry and Ed Sheeran have all backed the trust in its initiatives to support the industry, by including a modest fee to their admission fees, which goes to help smaller concert halls.

He also joined in, collecting over £100k on his live tour to help numerous local spots across Britain.

The donation supported locations that were confronting potential shutdown due to issues caused by floods, fire incidents and personal losses, as well as licensing issues, conflicts and noise complaints.

Additional spaces were granted funding support in upgrading infrastructure and technical equipment that directly benefitted artists and fans.

"The notion that money from shows in major spaces helps the smaller venues, where it kicks off for musicians like me, is just sensible," the star has commented.

He is among several artists to donate his Mercury Prize prize money to charitable organizations.

Back when Pulp won the award in the mid-90s for their release their work, frontman the singer stated that the group would give their prize money to the organization War Child.

During 2002, musician Ms Dynamite divided her prize among multiple good causes, like the children's charity and a Sickle Cell charity.

"And I gave a £1,000 to the center, to their gymnastics program, because I practiced gymnastics when I was a child and they lacked new equipment," the artist told outlets.

In recent years, the band donated their funds to the youth organization that supported their band, in addition to other independent music bodies.

Additionally winners that year M People donated their award to a charity for MS after a close contact was identified with the disease.

"Winning was ample," remarked artist the singer. "The money was the bonus but we didn't need the extra, because we had the main prize. So our winning touched somebody else's life."

Recently, the Music Venues Trust shared it had saved several small stages in the South East, by placing them under local control.

The first in Southampton and the other in the city were purchased under the public acquisition scheme, which is backed by Arts Council England and enthusiasts who buy "stakes" in the buildings.
