NYC's next chief executive, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to live in the historic Gracie Mansion, departing from his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue during his election bid.

An Iconic Home

Constructed in 1799, Gracie Mansion has been the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors from the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom housing costs is a key platform, hesitated to declare he would live there right away following his electoral win in November.

"My choice came down to keeping my family safe and the importance of dedicating all of my focus on implementing the platform on affordability the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.

Thanking a Neighborhood

He resided in Astoria, Queens, a district famous for its diverse immigrant communities and global cuisine.

"To Astoria: my gratitude for showing us the best of New York City," he expressed.

"Even though I'm moving in Astoria, Astoria will continue to reside within me and my efforts as mayor," he said.

Campaign Controversy

Throughout his campaign, Mamdani tied his core platform – halting rent increases – to his personal living arrangements.

Yet his critics, including ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, challenged Mamdani for remaining in the apartment even though he is from a well-known family.

A House Not Always Used

Not all mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, preferred to remain in his private home on the Upper East Side throughout his tenure, which wrapped up in 2012.

In his view, Bloomberg felt it could serve as a place for official events, and championed an extensive renovation of the older mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will be surrounded by a setting far removed from his modest Astoria home.

Adorned in pale yellow exterior, green shutters, and bright white balustrades, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure with views of the East River.

Internally, the ground floor of the historically styled mansion is appointed in the spirit of the home's original era.

The estate, which is said to has several bedrooms, also boasts enhanced security to secure the mayor and his family.

Ghostly Tales

A number of people have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the wife of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that they experienced doors opening and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.

The departing mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care what people claim," he stated in 2022. "There are ghosts in there, man."

A Critical Policy Issue

His former home is rent stabilised, meaning the city sets limits on how much landlords can hike the monthly cost each year.

New Yorkers see such units as crucial resources as the price of rent rises faster than what many can afford.

It was reported Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Per figures from the property website Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a single-bedroom unit in New York City is $3,500 a month.
