Line of Duty Announced for Seventh Season on the British Broadcaster
The acclaimed police drama Line of Duty is officially returning for its 7th season, confirmed by the BBC.
A brand new six-part season created by the show's creator starts production in Belfast this spring, according to the production team.
The actress shared her enthusiasm about the return, saying she was "thrilled" about the show's renewal. Adrian Dunbar remarked, "What a joy it is to know that the Three Amigos will be back filming together next year."
The last series wrapped up in 2021 with a final episode that attracted more than 17 million audience members. Rumors about a potential return have been circulating for some time, but confirmation only arrived this week.
New Challenges for The Team
Series seven will open with AC-12 no longer existing and rebranded as the new police oversight body, according to the announcement.
Steve Arnott, Kate Fleming, and Ted Hastings remain working to tackle misconduct within the law enforcement.
The team's mission "faces unprecedented challenges", and under these circumstances, these officers will take on their "most sensitive case so far."
New Character and Complex Case
A new character, DI Dominic Gough, described as a charismatic officer celebrated for takedowns of organized crime, faces allegations of abusing his position to act as a sexual predator.
Yet, his case could be a intentional diversion from a bigger threat still active in the background, plot details hinted.
In a statement, Jed Mercurio said: "All cast and crew are deeply thankful to the show's fans."
"It's an honor to have had countless fans track the developments of AC-12 over six previous seasons and we couldn't be more delighted to be returning for a seventh season."
He added: "Corruption in this country was thought to be over while Line of Duty was not airing, so I've been forced to use my imagination."
Cast Reactions
Martin Compston described being part of the series as "the role of a career".
"Not only the program's popularity but the colleagues I've collaborated with I now call some of my closest friends."
"I'm excited to pull the waistcoat on again and get the team back together," he said.
The Nottingham-born actress stated: "Obviously I'm very happy the show is returning! Eager to work with the creator, Compston and Adrian again. The city, we'll be there shortly!"
Adrian Dunbar noted: "As we count down the unit days of Christmas, how exciting it is to know that the central trio will be back filming next year."
"Delighted with the news and looking forward to those unexpected twists and turns."
Series Legacy
Line of Duty premiered in the early 2010s and became a highly successful TV dramas of the last decade, attracting guest stars such as Stephen Graham.
The BBC has not yet announced when the new season will premiere.
The finale of series six drew the long-running storyline about the hunt for kingpin known as "the mysterious H" to a conclusion, and the creative team indicated at the time there were no intentions for additional seasons.
However, the network announced on this week that a seventh series is now in development.
