Gavin Newsom Confirms He Is Weighing a 2028 Presidential Run

The California governor, a leading Democratic figure, has disclosed that he intends to determine whether to seek the White House in 2028 after the 2026 congressional elections wrap up.

"Yeah, I couldn't be truthful otherwise," Newsom commented when pressed about giving serious thought to a presidential run post the 2026 midterms. "It wouldn't be the truth. And I can't do that."

The governor's current term as California's leader ends in early 2027, and term limits prevent another run. However, he emphasized that any choice is a long way off.

"It's up to destiny," he remarked.

Rising Profile as a Administration Opponent

The California governor has stepped forward as a high-profile adversary of the Trump administration, employing his digital presence and championing a proposition that would increase Democratic congressional seats in as a counter to GOP gerrymandering. This strategy has made him a target from adversaries.

Clash on Transportation

The former president's transportation chief, Sean Duffy, claimed that the governor shows no concern about Californians in a weekend segment on Fox News. The secretary announced a strategy to cut government money from California and threatened revoking the power to provide trucking licenses.

"I intend to cut a significant sum from the state," Duffy said, following a recent deadly accident in the state involving an non-citizen trucker that caused loss of life and injured individuals.

Newsom's office highlighted that the U.S. government had renewed the driver's employment repeatedly, which allowed him to obtain a commercial driver's license under national regulations.

The transportation secretary had before indicated he was blocking $40m from California for not enforcing English language requirements for truck drivers.

Strong Response from the Governor's Office

"Former D-list reality star, now cabinet member, fails to grasp U.S. regulations," Newsom's office responded in a previous comment addressing the funding warnings. "For now, unlike this clown, we focus on reality: California commercial driver's license holders had a accident mortality rate much lower than the national average. Texas – the single state with a larger number of CDL holders – has a rate substantially higher than the state. Statistics are clear. The federal leadership misleads."

Public Opinion and Future Prospects

A recent survey revealed that nearly three-quarters of Democratic voters and almost half of voters indicated that the governor should run for the White House in 2028. After the current administration began, Newsom's favorability has increased to an average of 33.5% from around 30%, while his unfavorability has fallen from an mean of over 40% to 38.4%.

In previous months, Newsom commented while visiting several key regions that he had "no clue" about his future for 2028.

He also referenced his earlier challenges, including being identified as dyslexic at the young age of five.

"The idea that a person who had modest test scores, who continues to find reading challenging, who was always in the back of the classroom – the fact that this is even suggested is, in and of itself, remarkable," he said. "No one can say? I am eager to see who emerges in the next election and who answers the call. And that is the issue for the voters."
