Democratic lawmakers Denounce Trump After He States They Should Face Capital Punishment
Democratic officials demonstrated outrage after former President Donald Trump alleged a coalition of Democratic representatives of being "turncoats" and asserted they should be detained and punished "through capital punishment" following their posting of a controversial video.
The Recording That Sparked the Controversy
The video footage, released on earlier this week, showcases six Democratic congress members who formerly served in military or security positions.
"Like us, you all made an vow to safeguard and defend this national charter," the representatives declared in the short video. "And right now, the dangers to our democratic foundation don't only come from abroad, but from within our own country. Our laws are explicit, you can decline unlawful commands, you can decline illegal orders, you must refuse illegal orders. No one has to follow directives that violate the legal system or our national charter."
The Former President's Incensed Response
The recorded statement reportedly prompt a furious reply from the former president.
On Thursday morning, Trump posted on his social media platform: "It's called SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these traitors to our United States should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In an additional message, he declared: "This represents really bad, and Risky to our Nation. Their words cannot be permitted to persist. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a third message, he added: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, liable by DEATH!" He also redistributed a statement that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Opposition Leaders Answer
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, Top Democrats issued a unified statement condemning the remarks.
"Political violence has no place in this nation," they stated. "Elected officials who appeared in the video all served our country with exceptional loyalty and excellence. We unequivocally condemn Donald Trump's offensive and dangerous calls for execution against members of Congress, and call on GOP representatives to strongly do the same."
The Democratic leaders also stated that they had been in touch with security officials "to ensure the protection of these officials and their families."
"Donald Trump must without delay take down these extreme social media posts and withdraw his violent language before he leads to violence," the announcement added.
Representatives' Strong Response
The officials who appeared in the video also released a response.
"We are ex-military personnel and security experts who care for this United States and took an pledge to protect and support the constitution of the United States," they stated. "This commitment is permanent, and we aim to maintain it. No threat, coercion, or call for violence will deter us from that sacred duty."
"What's most telling is that the president views it punishable by execution for us to reiterate the statutes," they added. "Our service members should understand that we have their backs as they fulfill their pledge to the constitution and responsibility to adhere to only proper directives. It is not only the correct thing to do, but also our duty."
They added: "The entire nation must join forces and censure the ex-president's requests for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a time for principled stance."
More Governmental Reactions
The Senate Democratic leader also censured Trump's statements and shared on social media: "We must be absolutely clear: the ex-commander in chief is requesting the death of public representatives."
He stated: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. Each congressional member, every Representative, every American – without partisan consideration – should denounce this immediately and absolutely."
The GOP leader supported Trump's claim that the Democrats had engaged in "rebellion", characterizing the video as "extremely improper", adding: "This represents very risky, you have prominent officials of the government advising military personnel to ignore directives, I think that is historic in US history."
The Conservative representative also allegedly told the press that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "describing the violation of sedition" but that "lawyers have to analyze the wording and establish all that."
Executive Branch Response
During a administration briefing on later that day, when questioned by a journalist, "Is the president want to put to death elected officials?", the administration spokesperson answered: "Certainly not."
"Let's be clear about what the former president is reacting to," the representative said. "You have current representatives of the American legislature who worked together to orchestrate a video message to members of the US military, to current military personnel encouraging them to defy the commander in chief's lawful orders."
She stated: "The integrity of our military relies on the command structure, and if that chain of command is broken, it can result in casualties, it can cause disorder, and that is exactly what these congressional representatives ... are essentially encouraging."
