A Tale of Unexpected Generosity: When a University Student Allowed Me to Stay on Her Dorm Floor

During 2006, My journey took me to Canberra for an interview at a medical college. I assumed I would book a place to stay when I arrived, however when I arrived, a major event was taking place and all the backpackers hostels and cheap hotels were completely sold out.

Hailing from Singapore, I considered maybe I could spend the night at the airport – but soon learned that airport, unlike Singapore’s, does not operate all night. Not knowing what my next move should be and feeling increasingly desperate, I boarded a bus into town and began walking towards the casino, thinking I could pass those hours in an establishment that stayed open through the night. That wouldn’t put me at my peak to succeed at the admissions interview the next day, however, being a student on a tight budget, luxury accommodation was impossible.

Our society requires more people with such compassion.

I must have looked out of place since a woman saw me wandering around the city and asked if I was OK. I explained my predicament and without hesitation she said I could crash on the ground at her university residence at the local university – an ideal turn of events, considering that was where my interview was the following day. She even offered a meal: a leftover sandwiches she had from her part-time job. I had access to the bathroom and a secure location and secure to sleep.

With hindsight, I can appreciate what a big chance she undertook as a woman inviting a man she’d just met stay in her room. Back then I was in a bubble of male privilege and was oblivious about things like that. Now, as a father, I am astonished she did that – but still very grateful.

I didn’t end up attending ANU, and I never saw that kind stranger again, yet her memory has stayed with me that incredible gesture of kindness. It is my wish life has repaid her good deed abundantly. We could all use more folks who show such kindness.
