A comprehensive search and recovery effort is actively in progress in the Caribbean region for a duo of missing boats transporting aid cargo journeying from Mexico to Havana.

Maritime Search and Rescue Efforts Initiated

Authorities in Mexico has deployed naval assets and search planes to search for the Friendship and Tigger Moth, which were carrying no fewer than nine sailors, per a navy statement.

The vessels had been expected to arrive in the Cuban capital on Tuesday or Wednesday, but there has been no communication from them and no confirmation of their arrival, the navy said.

The Situation of Relief to Cuba

The Caribbean nation has leaned on humanitarian shipments from Mexico over the past few weeks, as the nation struggles through multiple national electricity failures.

"The crews and captains are seasoned mariners, and the two ships are fitted with suitable navigational gear and communication devices," a representative for the convoy said.

The nine-person crew are from France, Poland, the United States, and Cuba. Mexican authorities said it has opened communications with coast guard agencies from each country along with their embassy officials.

"The group is working closely with the officials and remain confident in the ability of the crews to make it to Cuba without incident," the spokesperson added.

Earlier Humanitarian Mission

Just days before, the Cuban authorities publicly celebrated and greeted with fanfare another boat that had transported 14 tons of relief supplies to the island.

That boat, nicknamed "a new Granma" in reference to the boat in which Fidel Castro returned to Cuba to begin the Cuban Revolution in the 1950s, delivered solar equipment, pharmaceuticals, infant formula, bicycles and foodstuffs.

Larger Geopolitical Climate

Volunteers and NGOs have primarily led initiatives to deliver humanitarian aid to Cuba since January, when a fuel embargo on the island nation was initiated.

The United Nations have since raised alarms about ""severe" lack of essential goods, with more than fifty thousand surgeries postponed in Cuba amid electricity supply constraints.

Foreign policy pressure have been ramped up in recent months, with comments from various representatives underscoring the delicate nature of relations.

Responding to recent statements, a senior Cuban official insisted that "the socialist system of Cuba is not subject to discussion."

Indications suggest that preliminary steps of talks commenced, although their ongoing development remains unclear.

The maritime authorities stated it was committed to using the full extent of its capabilities at its command to locate the vessels and ensure the security of the people on board.

As of now, there has been no official comment on the disappeared vessels by the government in Havana.
