Cameron Norrie secured the biggest success of his professional journey by rallying from a lost first set to overcome world No 1 Carlos Alcaraz in three hard-fought sets in the early stage of the Paris Masters.

While he had before overcome Alcaraz on two prior meetings, this victory marks Norrie's maiden victory over a sitting world top-ranked player.

"Massive. Incredibly significant for me," commented Norrie, who joins as the fifth British man in history to beat a top-ranked player. "Returning from a physical setback last year, I lost in the initial match of qualifying rounds here. I just tried to appreciate my game in the second half of the year. To achieve a triumph like this, it's the greatest victory of my tennis journey, my initial victory over the global number one and likely the strongest player in the sport right now."

Norrie, seeded 31st in the world, also halted Alcaraz's supreme sequence of nine straight final appearances and 17 successive Masters 1000 successes, which was the finest stretch of performances in the young champion's developing professional path.

Contest Breakdown

The top seed seemed to be advancing smoothly towards victory early on as he sailed through the opening set. Yet, Norrie gradually worked himself into the match by executing with sharper placement and dragging the Spaniard into extended, physical rallies. His relentless steadiness and reliability steadily took its toll.

For much of the battle, the world number one served well but he struggled badly to locate his rhythm with his rally strokes. The 22-year-old looked especially struggling hitting his primary weapon, which has been the best shot in the world for most of this year, haemorrhaging 29 forehand miscues and a total of 54 errors. Opposing him, Norrie gave his opponent minimal unforced errors, sustaining his steadiness, fitness and penetration all match while serving efficiently and picking his spots to force himself inside the baseline and play aggressively.

Following battling for an extended period due to a serious physical setback and challenges with his game, the tennis professional dropped as far down as No 91 this year. Having reached the advanced stages at the grass-court major and the clay-court Grand Slam fourth round subsequently, this win reinforces the 30-year-old's improvement as he attempts to come back to the top 20 and beyond. The Spanish sensation, in spite of his incredible accomplishments, is has not yet master how to deliver his finest performance on indoor courts.
