American flight controllers are increasingly seeking additional employment and calling in sick, as they remain on duty without pay during the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"The controllers are becoming strained," the official told Fox News on Sunday, as some flights were halted on the California shoreline due to personnel deficits.

After the federal closure on 1 October, flight controllers, who are deemed critical staff, were instructed to continue performing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been absent, causing airports to stop or slow their plane traffic, which has added to delays caused by climate and additional factors.

Over 3,000 American flights were delayed on Sunday, and Duffy said he anticipates the situation to grow worse.

"I observe the stress," Duffy said in an discussion on a weekend program, adding that he had met with several controllers to hear their concerns directly.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I work for Uber, am I able to secure an alternative of income to cover expenses?'" he added.

The secretary further mentioned that on Saturday twenty-two notifications at airfields indicated flights would be delayed due to a shortage of workers - one of the highest after the closure started.

The US government shutdown entered its twenty-sixth day on Sunday, making it the second most extended halt in the past.

Duffy has consistently cautioned that aviation regulators would slow down the number of planes in the air if there is a shortage of security staff.

In his interview, he declined to respond straightforwardly when questioned if it was secure to travel by air in the United States, and instead made a personal plea to the professionals.

"I require my staff focused on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at their households," Duffy stated.

On that day, some planes were grounded at LAX due to employee deficits, leading to disruption at the fifth-busiest terminal in the nation and one of the busiest in the world, as well as additional travel stretching upward to the city of Oakland, California.
