Adult Swim's Premier New Show of This Year Gets a Significant Renewal for an Additional Two Seasons.
Last October, the late-night programming block welcomed back its quirky hit, Smiling Friends. But, later that same month, the channel unveiled a completely new animated series with a markedly softer vibe. Haha, You Clowns emerged as gentle and comforting, reminiscent of a animated take of a contemplative talk show. At a time often defined by cynicism, this show's earnestness found an audience and propelled it a surprise hit.
A Two-Season Greenlight
On December 18th, the network confirmed a big renewal: Haha, You Clowns has been renewed for a further two seasons. This offers creator Joe Cappa a massive runway to develop the story of the Campbell family. The show centers on three well-mannered teenage brothers whose central trait is their profound affection for their single father, with Cappa providing the voices for all four central characters.
"I’m so grateful to the audience of the show who gave *Haha, You Clowns* a chance and spread the word," remarked Cappa. "I’m incredibly thrilled that I get to spend more time in the Campbell household for the foreseeable future."
Network Praise
In the same announcement laudits from Adult Swim president Michael Ouweleen, who described the series as "radically heartfelt and strangely uncanny." He thanked the fans who found the show and championed its uniquely offbeat sensibility.
"All of you got behind this new show, championed for it on social media, and expanded its audience week over week so we could greenlight not one, but two more seasons," said Ouweleen. "In the words: 'You are strong! You are loved!'"
A Different Kind of Comedy
When it first aired, Haha, You Clowns was praised as "a gentle counterpart" to other adult animated fare. There’s something unexpectedly cozy about observing this endearing family go about their simple existence.
In earlier interviews, creator Joe Cappa shared his hope to help comedy break out of its prevailing cynical streak. He linked this trend to various cultural shifts.
“It feels like there's a default mode of irony that we keep returning to,” noted Cappa. “It's like we have to know we’re the smartest person in the room when we're watching stuff. I feel like we've been doing this for 10 years, and we need to laugh at something different now. Comedy has to evolve.”
What Comes Next
Now, with Haha, You Clowns locked in for the future, Cappa could potentially be part of that change he described. If nothing else, the renewal promises audiences a little more time to experience the heartfelt moments of the endearing Campbell clan.
The first season's conclusion of Haha, You Clowns will premiere on December 21st. All episodes is available for streaming on HBO Max.
